12 Sep Official Presentation at the CGAC (Santiago de Compostela)
Today, the official presentation of Aberto 2024 took place at the CGAC (Galician Center for Contemporary Art), an event organized by the Galician Association of Contemporary Art Galleries (Contemporánea). Aberto will be held from September 19th to 22nd, bringing together the nine most important galleries of contemporary Galician art.
During the presentation, the Director General of Culture, Anxo Lorenzo, enthusiastically congratulated Contemporánea for organizing Aberto 2024, highlighting “the challenge of aligning the diverse interests of the nine participating galleries under a common goal,” which is “to promote and disseminate contemporary art and artists in Galicia, while strengthening the commercial activity of the sector, prioritizing collective interests over private ones.” He also emphasized that this aligns with the aims of both the CGAC and the Xunta de Galicia, through this vital collaboration, which includes the acquisition of artworks with a budget of around €15,000 from the CGAC, in addition to the year-round financial support provided by the Xunta, one of the strongest economic pillars of this initiative.
In addition to Anxo Lorenzo, who also unveiled the new poster and website for Aberto, which will be launched this weekend, two key coordinators of Aberto 2024 spoke: Luisa Pita, president of Contemporánea and director of Galería Luisa Pita, and Lucía Carballeda Suárez, director of Galería Dupla. Both emphasized the importance of collaborative work between galleries and their partners to make this unique event possible in Galicia.
Luisa Pita highlighted the crucial support of institutions and sponsors that enable Aberto. She expressed special thanks to the Xunta de Galicia, particularly to the Director of Culture, Anxo Lorenzo, for their ongoing commitment to the project, as well as to the new sponsors this year: NH Collection, Fundación RIA, Fundación María José Jove, and the University of Santiago de Compostela, through the Department of Art History. She also acknowledged the continued support of Hijos de Rivera, a long-time collaborator of Contemporánea.
“Each of our sponsors helps strengthen the bridge between contemporary art and the Galician community, helping us democratize access to culture and open the doors of our galleries to everyone,” said Luisa Pita during her speech. “Their support allows us to spotlight the work of artists and give Galicia a prominent place on the international art scene.”
Lucía Carballeda emphasized the communication work carried out by Contemporánea, highlighting the effort to bring contemporary art closer to a broader audience through social media, press, and public relations. “We are clear that our goal goes beyond showcasing art pieces: we want to create a real connection between the public and the artists, making access easier and removing barriers that often distance people from our galleries,” Carballeda stated.
Carballeda also underscored the synergies that arise from being part of an association like Contemporánea, where galleries work closely together to promote both international and emerging artists. This year, Aberto will feature a high-level artistic lineup, including artists such as Lula Goce, Iván Prieto, Elena Narbutaité, and Fernando Suárez Reguera, among others, offering the public a unique opportunity to discover innovative trends in contemporary art.
With Aberto 2024, Galicia will once again become a hub for contemporary art. The event will take the public on a cultural journey through the cities of Vigo, A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, and Ourense, where the participating galleries – Dupla, Luisa Pita, Metro, Trinta, Nordés, Vilaseco, PM8, Moret Art, and Marisa Marimón – will hold a joint opening, showcasing the diversity and creativity of contemporary art.
The opening of Aberto 2024 will take place on September 19th, inviting everyone to join in this unique celebration of art in Galicia.
